Free at Last

Tomorrow we can read Frank Rich again for free.

Today The New York Times corrected a gross error--the one they made two years ago when they put their columnists and other reporters behind a wall they called TimesSelect and slapped an annual charge of over fifty dollars for the privilege of reading them. Well, they've discovered that the money they made from subscribers doesn't equal the money they've lost from advertisers.

So tonight at midnight (Septemner 19, 2007), the entire Times will be free.

I guess now I'll find out the hard and ugly way how many real readers I have.

But why would you have had to read Rich at the Times when I was posting it for free this past one year plus?

Sorry Jurassicpork. Guilty as charged. I was so giddy at the thought of the Times breaking down its wall I forgot to point out that your splendid blog, Welcome to Pottersville has given us free for more than a year op ed opinions from Rich, Herbert, Krugman, the annoying Dowd and others. And you did this at risk to yourself in spite of dire threats of action from the Times. Ironically you helped the NYT come to its senses and recognize that it was bleeding readers instead of gaining them.

Still, its your own outraged voice that makes your blog so interesting and draws your readers to it, so keep up the good work.
